Cheap gear disrupts commercial video industry

Dave Knickerbocker knew something was wrong when shrimp scampi was baked into the six-figure bill he received for a hockey commercial shoot.
A production assistant cooking shellfish on the set of a four-hour shoot at the United Center in 2009 was a sign for the former Chicago Blackhawks marketing chief: There had to be a more efficient way to spend the team's video budget.
Six years later, Knickerbocker is running Banner Collective, a video production company spun out of the Blackhawks in 2013 that's been hired by Vienna Beef, CareerBuilder.com and the Chicago Cubs, among others.
